The Caucasus - My Journal
Final Day in Sofia
23rd July - Sofia

Most of today was spent sleeping, trying to recover from yesterday night. Luckily I didn't have much to do, so in between naps I checked out the sights I had yet to see.

In fact, my last two days in Sofia passed in a lazy fashion, with the few sights sandwiched between sampling Bulgarian meals and sipping on coffees. The only sights of real interest are Sofia's sizable collection of impressive and historic churches, monasteries and mosques. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to see the most famous one, the Rila monastery, just outside of Sofia, as private transport has to be arranged in order to get to it and I didn't have the time or money to do this. Never mind, I'll definitely be coming back here again sometime soon!

As my time in Eastern Europe drew to a close, I began to get more and more excited about moving onto Turkey. Turkey and the Caucasus were the main items on my itinerary. I'd only called into Eastern Europe to call on friends and check out briefly some countries I hadn't seen before. Life in Eastern Europe isn't hugely different to life in Western Europe (yes, there are some key differences, but most things are familiar, with their local nuances). But the exciting and very different cultures in Turkey were now tantalisingly close...and on Sunday night I headed down to Sofia train station to catch the Bosphor Express, an overnight sleeper train, to Istanbul.
