The Kit

This is the list of little extras that you won't get far without. You'll need everything on this list if you want to keep your life safe and easy.

Also remember to note down your passport, visa, travellers cheques and credit/debit card details somewhere separate. Keeping a record at home is good. Keeping a record on line is even better. I recommend the ultra-safe Lonely Planet EKit Service.

Item Description Info
Money belt worn UNDER the clothes.
  • The pale brown ones that fit flat against your body and are worn under the clothes.
  • They are by far the best way to store your valuables. I wore mine almost all the time and it's nice to know that your most important things are safe.
  • Do not wear the ones that are worn outside your clothes like 'bumbags'. These are not secure at all and are very easy to steal.
Essential Documents
  • Passport
  • Flight tickets
  • Insurance Documents
  • Necessary Visas
  • Travellers Cheques & purchase receipts (kept separately)
2 Wallets
  • I always carried 2 wallets, a real one and a dummy one. In the case of a mugging I could hand over the dummy one. The contents of each are described below.
  • Real Wallet: Half of the cash in the currency of the current country; Visa card; Debit card; Driving Licence; Other important cards
  • Dummy Wallet: Cash in the currency of current country for daily expenses; unimportant ID; unimportant cards; expired debit card.
  • I also carried the other half of the cash in the currency of the current country and all my US Dollars cash in my money belt.
Trousers Belt with secret pocket.
  • This is a plain looking belt that actually has a hidden, narrow zip pocket in it.
  • I stored one US$50 Traveller's Cheque and US$20 cash in it.
