Missions & McDonalds
Santa Barbara, 13th November 2001.

Oooh! Free chocolate mini-muffins for the free breakfast in our hotel. Yummy & nutritious! Not. After a quick expedition for some proper breakfast (although Stinge seems more than happy with the muffins, more nutritious than his usual breakfast, it would seem ;o) ) we got ourselves together and took a stroll around Santa Barbara during daytime. The sunny Mexican villa style was even more apparent in the strong midday sun that California is famous for.

The morning passed quietly, the only excitement being a major bank with a big sign saying 'Bank Shut Due To Emergency Situation'. The large number of police cars gathered around the front hinted to what this 'emergency situation' was. After a few minutes of hanging around in a nosy manner, we continued our walk around town.

After a while though, we decided to split up for a while, because we all wanted to see different things. After setting a time to meet, we all walked off in different directions, Stinge's direction seemed to be straight for the nearby McDonalds...

I took a longish walk through the peaceful, tropical, green suburbs of Santa Barbara to find the famous Mission. Across the whole of the States are religious buildings called 'Missions' where religious services were held, and people on the road could spend a quiet night, making use of their famous hospitality. In California, each mission is within a day's walk from at least one other mission, making them very useful for ye olde travellers. The building was hugely impressive with some stunning architecture. I later learned that the Santa Barbara Mission is considered one of the most beautiful in California.

After I'd taken enough photos and explored the area, I headed back to meet Nat at the art gallery. After grabbing some more McDonalds to fuel Nat's addiction, we went to the clock tower so we could climb up and get some good views of the town. We also went to check out the barracks, which sounded interesting, but looked dead boring, so we ended up skipping them and heading back to meet the others.

After a short walk through the market (copious amounts of free samples! Yeay!) we grabbed dinner at Chilangos before going back to the hotel room. It was still quite early, but we decided to have a quiet evening watching telly & chatting. For some unknown reason a pillow fight broke out as well, but I guess you need at least one on any holiday. After things calmed down. we did some reading & diary work before we decided to pass out.
