The Journal

The Odyssey Ends
Bangkok, 19th to 22nd June 2002

My last few days of my time in Thailand, and in fact my gap year, were spent enjoying the hustle of Bangkok.

I spent a few days with Andy, Gilad and Lydia, and a couple on my own as people continued their travels or headed home themselves. The time passed quickly because there was so much to keep us busy!

Highlights included:
- Khao Sahn Road - fantastic for shopping. So many different things to buy! Some really bizarre, some really funky and some actually really useful.
- Gilad invited me to a Habbad on Fri night, a really interesting experience and an opportunity to see into a religion I previously knew very little about.
- I actually got ill for a couple of days, so I had the fun of paying a visit to a doctor's surgery. It was actually very expensive, so I was very glad I had insurance to claim it back on!
- I paid a couple of visits to the cinema on some of the quiet nights. I like going to the cinema, so I needed to make sure I was up to date with all the latest films, especially at the crazily cheap Thai prices!

Unfortunately, in the busy time of my last few days, I got very lazy with my journal and lots of things I did, I didn't write down! And now, at the time I put all of this on-line, I've forgotten lots of the details!

But, even though I can't write down exactly what I did, I know had a great few days and my Gap Year rolled to a sensible and happy conclusion. To be totally honest, I'd had an amazing few months, but part of me yearned for a little break and some home comforts...

My gap year had been the greatest part of my life and it really was amazing in so many ways. I'd learned things I had never thought of, I'd met people from all walks of life, I'd seen things I could never imagine.

I'd highly recommend that everyone take a gap year and take some time to see the world around them!

And I'm sure, that after I've had a quick break I'll be back on the road and exploring other countries and cultures. The world is a huge place, and I've only had a small taste of what it has to offer.

I hope you've enjoyed my diary and that I've inspired you to undertake your own backpacking adventure!
