A Mansion To Live In
Melbourne, 7th January 2002

We woke quite early so we could get our stuff packed. Emily had phoned some people she knew who live in Melbourne and they had agreed to let us stay with them for a few days. Yeay! The ultimate backpacker resource...friends and family!

We spent the morning in town, chatting over coffee. We had decided to definitely buy a car, but we had a further choice to make: (1) Fly to Sydney, then buy a car there, where there is a HUGE backpacker car market; or (2) Buy a car from the much more limited car market here in Melbourne. (The flight to Sydney is only about A$85 , about 26 pounds). We decided we'd probably go for option 2, so we had another look at the beige van we were eyeing up yesterday.

Just after lunch, we headed off to the station to catch a train to the suburb where Emily's friends live. And boy, were we in for a pleasant surprise!! After being met at the other station, we were driven to their house on the beach. When I say house, I actually mean a mansion! It's a huge building with countless rooms & annexes, 3 generations of the family live in the house, but because it's so big, you can easily go for days without seeing the others. They have their own tennis court, mini-cinema, spa pool and more. The house is right on the beach. The living room has a huge wall size windows with a balcony and fantastic beach views. The whole house is just unbelievable! It's how you'd imagine an American film star's home to look!

We chatted with Emily's friends all evening and had a fantastic meal. I don't quite know how they know each other, but a young guy called Kes has done loads of travelling all over the world. He had got some fantastic tales and photos. The whole family seems to be really active doing loads of swimming, marathon running, hiking and more. We had some really interesting conversations late into the evening. After we'd finished, we took a quick dip in the spa pool (yes, spa pool!) before hitting the sack.
