The Journal

Angkor Wat
Siem Reap, 14th to 18th June 2002

The next few days were spent at Cambodia's second town, Siem Reap. Siem Reap itself is a fairly peaceful town with little special to do, however, it is right next to one of the world's most famous sights...Angkor Wat.

Angkor Wat is a vast collection of temples, scattered for miles around Siem Reap. There are literally 100s of temples in all conditions, from the almost destroyed to the superbly restored. More information can be found in the Angkor Wat entry in WikiPedia or at the official Angkor Wat website or at Angkor.com.

Unfortunately, I can't detail my adventures around Angkor Wat and Siem Reap, my journal entries were lost during a hard drive failure (:o( ). However, I will soon make all of my Angkor Wat photos available..

In a nutshell, I spent a few days touring about the ancient wonders of these stunning temples on the back of a equally ancient motorbike. Life's much easier with a guide who knows his way around, and I'd suggest doing the same. Basically, I found a very nice moto-driver in my guesthouse who became my guide for the days. By guide, I mean driver only, he doesn't know about the temples, but he knows where they all are. So armed with the Angkor Wat guide (available from all heckling children in the Angkor Wat region, I picked and chose the ones I wanted to see, then he took me there.

There are 100s of temples, and unless you're a professor in ancient history, seeing just a handful is more than sufficient! It really was an amazing experience! The site truly is a wonder of the eworld!
